FORBIDDANCE TO EAT GARLIC,ONIONS, AND ANYTHING OF OFFENSIVE SMELL WHILE COMING TO THE MOSQUE

Bismillah Arrahman Arraheem

This Hadith give us the actual position wwith regard to the eating of garlic and onion. These vegetables are not HARAM (forbidden) and, therefore, their use does not incur the wrath of ALLAH Subhana Wa Taala. The only care which ISLAM wants us to take in their use is that we should refrain fdrom going to the mosque, or joining prayer while our mouth emits foul odor. These should be either well cooked so that the odour is lost or we should rinse our mouth or wait till it dies out. This odor is repugnant to the fine and delicate sense of the Prophet(Alayhi salatu wa salam) and the Angels.

This Hadith also makes it clear that the Holy Prophet (Alayhi salatu wa salam) obeys the commands of ALLAH and is not authorised to give command on his own behalf or make even the slightest alteration on it.

Ibn Umar reported : The Messenger(Alayhi salatu wa salam) said during the battle of khaybar : He who ate of this plant, i.e. garlic, should not come to the mosques. In the narration of Zuhair , there is only a mention of "battle" and not of Khaybar.

Ibn Umar reported : That the Messenger(Alayhi salatu wa salam): He who eats of this (offensive) plant must not approach our mosque , till it's odour dies: (plant signifies garlic).

Ibn Suhaib reported:Anas was asked about the garlic; he stated that the Messenger(Alayhi salatu wa salam) had said; He who eats of this plant (garlic) should not approach our mosque and pray along with us.

Jabir reported : The Messenger(Alayhi salatu wa salam) forbade eating of onions and leeks. When we were overpowered y a desire (to eat) we ate them. Upon this he(Alayhi salatu wa salam) said : He who eats of this offensive plant must not approach our mosque , for the Angels are harmed by the same things as men.

Jabir repoted : The Messenger(Alayhi salatu wa salam)said : he who eats garlic or onion should remain away from us or from our mosque and stay in his house. A kettle was brought to him which had (cooked) vegetables in it. He smelt (offensive) odour in it. On asking he was informed of the vegetables (cooked in it). He said: Take it to such and such companion. When he saw it , he also disliked eating it. (Upon this), he (Alayhi salatu wa salam) said: You may eat it, for I conversse with one with whom you do not converse.

Means : " I converse with the angel whereas you do not ".

The teachings of Sunnah so that the people may have an unceasing contact with the Holy Prophet (SAW) who is the real focus of a Muslim's loyalty and the messenger of Divine Will.

The Sunnah of the Holy Prophet is the only way by which one can understand "DIN" correctly. It's teachings is, therefore, one of the basic duties of the Islamic State.
